The use of antimicrobial gloves by healthcare workers reduced multi-drug resistant Escherichia coli and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcocus aureus (MRSA) transmission by at least 90% after long-term exposures to the pathogens, and by 100% after short-term exposures, investigators from the University of Texas reported here Wednesday at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC).

The antimicrobial gloves were "highly efficacious" in preventing the adherence of nosocomial multidrug resistant bacteria and may be very useful in the clinical setting, said Dr. Ruth Reitzel, who presented her team’s findings. The use of these gloves in the food industry, such as in restaurants, school cafeterias and food packing plants, could similarly reduce the risk of food poisoning.
