in MRSA in English Hospitals

The two main hospital trusts that serve Barnet were officially named among the worst in the country for MRSA infection rates this week but both insist they are battling back from the brink.

The figures, released by the Department Of Health on Monday, show that Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals NHS Trust is top of the list, with not only the highest rate of the superbug, but the highest number of cases in the country from April to September last year.

The Royal Free Trust, which is based in Hampstead, but offers specialist operations for patients in the borough, is also among the worst, with 37 cases reported and an infection rate of 0.26 (the number of MRSA cases in patients over a period of 1,000 bed days).

Barnet and Chase Farm insists that since injecting more than 180,000 into hiring an infection control nurse and other staff, as well as bringing in a raft of new cleaning measures last autumn, the number of cases has almost halved.
