Wellington: A parliamentary committee is calling for a national surveillance system for infections acquired in hospitals to be set up urgently but the Health Ministry is warning such a system would be expensive. The Health Committee made the call in its report into the problem following an earlier inquiry by the Auditor-general’s office. New Zealand hospitals have been seriously affected by people falling sick with infections caught while in care for other illnesses.
