Parents were notified Monday that someone who had been in Wait Primary School Friday has been diagnosed with a MRSA infection. “We are stepping up our cleaning practices,” Superintendent Linda T. Keller said. Keller said the individual was not a student, but declined to give more details. The highest chance for students to contract the infection has “probably” passed, Keller said, adding the district wanted to warn parents of the situation and to make sure students were washing their hands regularly and taking showers or baths.

The nurse quote below is unhelpful. The reality is that MRSA has several infection paths and that close contact is not the only vector.
The Pine-Richland School District said it will take any preventative measures necessary after a student was diagnosed with MRSA. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is a skin infection that starts as small red bumps. The Allegheny County Health Department said it’s unlikely the disease will spread to anyone else in the school. “It really requires direct contact with the infected area where you have the skin infection,” said Guillermo Cole, of the health department. “In most cases, that’s not going to occur in normal school activities.”

Parents gathered last week at Ebinger School in Edison Park to get details about a student being diagnosed last week with MRSA — an antibiotic-resistant skin infection –and what preventive measures were taken over the three-day weekend. Most of the parent meeting was closed to the news media, but officials later briefed the Edison-Norwood Times Review about the discussion. Officials said the message to those who filled many of the chairs in the gymnasium of the school, 7350 W. Pratt Ave., was that all the necessary precautions were taken and that children were no more at risk of becoming infected with methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus at Ebinger than they were anywhere else.

The parent of the child, who attends Hamlin Elementary School, notified the office late Tuesday. The letter said the custodial department thoroughly cleaned the classroom in order to disinfect all surfaces. Custodial staff also performed a comprehensive cleaning in the other two kindergarten rooms, as well as the SAC/K-Club room, and the office clinic as a precautionary measure. “We share this information with you so that you can watch for symptoms and notify your pediatrician of the possible exposure,” read the letter signed by Hamlin Principal Gary S. Cornish.
“The child had run a temperature for three days and was experiencing a sore throat and mild headaches. The parent reported sores on the inside of the child’s throat. The child was out of school for several days but returned to school last Friday after being on the antibiotic; amoxicillin. Upon diagnosis of a staph infection, the doctor has prescribed a stronger antibiotic and the child will be out of school for a few more days.”
