In a statement to the Commons, Mr Johnson promised there would be no reorganisation of primary care trusts and strategic health authorities for the foreseeable future.

He also announced new measures to tackle hospital bugs such as Clostridium difficile and MRSA, promising every authority new funding for clean wards and doubling the size of infection "hit squads" which can be sent into trusts suffering problems.
