Dallas County Jail inmates are using medicated washcloths in an attempt to stop the spread of drug-resistant staph infections, officials said. The effort is part of a three-year University of Chicago study into the spread of MRSA infections at the Texas jail, The Dallas Morning News reported Tuesday. Improved hygiene and cleaning efforts have contributed to a drop in the number of MRSA cases reported inside the jail, the report said. Dr. Robert Daum, professor of pediatrics at the University of Chicago, said his research team is testing washcloths treated with a chemical antiseptic called chlorhexidine to see if the cloths help reduce the spread of the bacterial infections. About 1,200 inmates have volunteered to participate.
