The race to approve a new antibiotic for treating the drug-resistant “superbug” known as MRSA intensified last week when Trius Therapeutics revealed data showing its experimental drug has potential for curing severe skin infections.

The drug, known as TR-701, helped clear up infections caused by the harmful bacteria in 98 percent of patients at the lowest dose. The 188 study participants received the once-daily antibiotic pill for five to seven days. The study was conducted at eight U.S. research centers.

While the drug remains to be tested in Phase 3 trials, CEO Jeff Stein said it showed favorable results across infection types.
