Northwestern Lehigh High School officials said this week that a student reported contracting an antibiotic-resistant bacteria that has become common among high school and college athletes and a second has a suspected case .

The two students were told by doctors within the past week that they contracted methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, a mutated form of bacteria that was formerly only found in hospitals, said Northwestern Athletic Director Jason Zimmerman.

The incidents were not connected, and the families don’t think their children contracted a staph infection from playing sports at Northwestern Lehigh. One student plays a sport that isn’t in season, and the other plays a sport outside of school, he said.

”But because of the seriousness of the bacteria, we’re making sure everything — our locker rooms, our weight rooms — are completely sanitized,” Zimmerman said.
