Classes for about 1,400 students were canceled Wednesday after officials learned that a high school student had been treated for a staph skin infection.  All three schools in the Nelsonville-York City School District – the elementary school, junior high school and high school – were closed so custodial staff could disinfect the buildings, Superintendent Ted Bayat said.

Bayat said he was informed Tuesday that the student, a football player, was treated at a local hospital over the weekend for a skin infection caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. Such bacteria are resistant to the penicillin family of drugs long used for treatment.

The superintendent said he decided to close the schools so bathrooms, locker rooms, doorknobs, drinking fountains and computer equipment could be cleaned as a precautionary and "proactive" measure.
