One confirmed case of MRSA in Summers County has put parents, teachers, and health officials on high alert. A student in the Summers County School District has tested positive for MRSA.

It’s a type of staph infection that resists typical oral antibiotics. MRSA must be combated using stronger medication.

Sandra Ball with the Summers County Health Department fielded at least twenty calls on Wednesday from concerned parents.

Ball says staph and MRSA can be spread among people with close physical contact. This is particularly a problem for school athletes.

Ball says, "When they go into locker rooms we want to make sure they don’t share towels and soap and everything’s kept as clean as possible. The school staff is working very hard to make sure that’s done. It actually should be done anyway."
