A nasty skin infection that has struck professional, collegiate and high school athletes has hit Bishop Stang High School, which reported two confirmed cases and a possible third case among male student athletes.
Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, commonly known as MRSA, is a particularly stubborn staph infection that is resistant to certain antibiotics, including methicillin and other more common antibiotics such as oxacillin, penicillin and amoxicillin, according to the Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Web site.
Theresa Dougall, president of Bishop Stang High School, said yesterday the school became aware of the health issue Tuesday, the day after Labor Day, when three students reported some type of skin infection.
