A HOSPITAL patient with the superbug MRSA was moved to a bed alongside other patients because of a staffing crisis.

The elderly woman had been put in an isolation ward after catching the bug following an operation at the Southern General, Glasgow.

But last month she was put back on an ordinary ward because of weekend staffing problems.

Last night, campaigners and MSPs said the move put other patients at risk of infection and demanded an urgent inquiry.

SNP health spokeswoman Shona Robison said: "The guidelines are clear on not moving infected patients from one area to another. I understand there are often problems with bed shortages and resources.

"But when infections such as MRSA are so prevalent, protocols must be adhered to if we are to stem the risk of infecting others."

My mother has just passed away in Hemel Hempstead Hospital of a stroke. She was taken off her medication (Warfarin) because she had MRSA in her hip replacement wound. Thoroughout her stay in hospital we were very dissatisfied with her treatment. The protocols for MRSA were not properly adhered to. We were informed she had MRSA but she wasn’t moved to a side ward until a few days later. Also when she was moved to a new ward the staff on the new ward were not aware she had MRSA(the sister said it had not been communicated to them in the notes!). So they had been treating her as a normal patient until my sister told the staff later in the day when she was visiting. We feel we have a case against the hospital as the medication was withdrawn which was trying to prevent the strokes and the nurses were not all wearing protective gloves at all times.
