Link: ‘Superbug’ strikes 8-year-old.
Eight-year-old Jewaun Smith was riding his bike when he fell off and scraped his knee.
Six days later he was in intensive care at University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital with an infection his doctor said "was progressing with lightning speed."
What brought Jewaun to death’s door was a staph infection that is resistant to most antibiotics. Such infections used to be confined to hospital patients. But during the past 10 years, they have become increasingly common in healthy people outside hospitals.
In most patients, such infections are relatively minor, causing pus-filled skin sores, and perhaps fever.
Jewaun was infected with an especially virulent form of the bug, and this strain also may be becoming more common. Last month, U. of C. researcher Dr. Robert Daum and colleagues reported in the New England Journal of Medicine that staph superbugs have killed one baby and two toddlers at the hospital.
